PART 4 PERSONAL RESEARCH METHODOLOGY: Project 5 Context

I remember taking my daughter to see the Elgin marbles when she was studying the Greeks at school. I remember being in awe of them, their size is immense, they sit like Gods in the vast halls of the British museum. The space feels like it has been built to as a palace for them.

Unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity to view Rodin - Burghers of Calais 1884-1889, I was hoping to go and see it in person but time has not been on my side, so I have had to settle for online for now. I can imagine it being very powerful to see in person, as the figures appear haunting in the street. Once you've read the history behind the figures and who they are you understand Rodin's description of his work
"pain, anguish and fatalism".

Being hidden away in a museum or gallery would lose the emotion you get from seeing them outside with people walking by. I could imagine turning the corner and being hit with the view of the tortured souls.

                              Car seat fabric                                          Juggling Scarves

My first observation on my hunt for textiles was that it was varied. From the typical items of clothing, which is a lot of peoples first thought when you tell them you are doing a textiles degree, fashion is the first thing to come to mind. To the other end of the scale with the beautiful textile art hanging in gallery. Then all the everyday items such a cushions, seat covers in between.

Another observation is how contrasting textile can be, from the tactile hangings of Saroj Patel, where I could walk through her work, get up close and feel the work. With the contrast of a hanging tapestry to delicate to touch just to be admired at a distance.

Also, the type of materials used reflect in their usage, the soft, cosy cushion for a sofa. Whereas the outdoor cushion was waterproof and rigid, practical for their usage.

Colour is also important, bright, playful coloured, light weight, juggling scarves used to entertain children. To the dull, practical, hard wearing, fabric used to be durable for it purpose.
