PART 3 RESEARCH AND PRACTICE: Project 3 Critical reflection

It has been interesting to go back and look over my tutor’s feedback. I tend to just skim through write a quick response and move on. Then reflect again at the feedback when it comes to formal submission to help me pick units to submit.

I realise I have a complete lack of focus when it comes to writing and reading. I begin and then get distracted very quickly, so I was surprised when after my formal assessment and now my current tutor commented on the amount of writing I produced wasn’t necessary. I’m hoping I have taken this feedback onboard for Part two.

Reflecting back on past work I can see that they have begun from a theme but I hadn’t realised. I know think of a theme like a seed planting that initial idea or concept and then watching it grow and branch off into different directions.

Research has been a key part of both part one and two. There has been a lot of research into other artists. It has really helped me to develop my knowledge and techniques, especially when I have been able to gather my own artists to research. Finding my own style from walking around a gallery or trolling the internet for artist I am inspired by. Gathering images, descriptions and objects to create a database of inspiration for future projects. Such as artist Joana Choumali, which I discovered on a visit to the V&A and had been drawn to their work due to it being within the photography section but was beautifully embroidered. Making a note of the artist and capturing image to save for a later date. I have then been able to pull on this work for inspiration in part two.

On the other hand, being told to research a particular artist opened opportunities to find out information on artists I would have passed by, disliking their work. For example, Tracey Emin. I have said a few times during my studies I had originally not been a admirer of her work. But after learning her inspiration and themes of work, I began to see Emin’s work with a more positive view.

This was evident in my theme choices in part two. I felt more confident in my work relating to personal experience. Although I felt more restricted as I had an idea, an end goal in mind which did not always lead to the most to the more positive responses from my tutor. I believe I felt more confident with personal experience as I have loads of my own research I can pull upon. Although it tends to be negative experiences, I automatically think of rather than the positives. Perhaps that I should aim for in future works, looking at the more positive experiences.

I tended to achieve my favourable feedback on the themes I was less confident with, meaning I had less of a desire for perfection. Resulting in my more playful samples, such as some of my action samples. Stretching me the most in terms of thinking, I struggled to think of ways to interpret the word this led to me exploring more experimental techniques and thinking outside of the box.

I tried to be braver and push techniques further in part two. Continuing to ask myself what would happen if, and what would happen if I did this?

I believe this is visible within the body of work below, beginning with a mind map. Another suggestion from my tutor to bring into my work, as an alternative to writing loads. This helped me to develop those branches of creativity that led to a interesting, creative selection of work.

I think that my most difficult piece to make was the body of work using my face. It filled me with dread having to firstly take pictures of myself and then to add to the shame I had to make them A3 size. But I overcame that fear and ripped that plaster off, and I began to enjoy distorting my face, with collage, stitching and drawing. I particularly enjoyed destroying my face and combining it with my collage pieces to represent feelings. I was even brave enough to leave this piece of work out for my family to see, and secretly as a hint to the stress I was under.

I also bought in a new tool, using an app called photopea. This was incredibly stressful at first as I had no idea what I was doing and it took me a lot longer than it needed to. Luckily after some support from a friend I began to feel more confident. There were certainly interesting technics which couldn’t have been created without the use of the app, so it had its plus points. But if I am completely honest I missed the hands on practical side to the cutting and sticking version of editing.

Thinking about which theme I would like to move forward with for project 4, as much as I would like to push myself and go for Actions. I would feel more comfortable with Personal Experiences, this is my opportunity to go for a more positive subject matter. I can also continue to incorporate colour into my work, an area I have been developing throughout this course. Becoming braver in my colour palette choices, such as my printing samples from my word theme collection.

Reflecting back over my visual research from part two, I believe that the playground surface images would be a good starting point and what they represent. Those joyful afternoons at the park with my children, with playful, vibrant, sometimes warn through so much usage colours. Even the sounds of the children playing could be explored as part of project four, as I did during my journey work. Or even exploring how to visualise a feeling and what colour and texture would that feeling be? there are so many possibilities with these theme.  I can already feel ideas starting to sprout, for this next theme.
