PART 3 RESEARCH AND PRACTICE: Exercise 3.5 Constructing a cloth

 Sketching ideas for constructing cloth

I had a clear vision of the colour theme I want to continue with for these samples. Going for a similar idea as before with there being a split between nature and play. I just needed to think of ways to express these themes in cloth.

I began by looking through some of the books for inspiration from artists such as Layered cloth by Ann Small this is where the inspiration for the daisy sample came from. Using the cut layers to replicate the grass, with a variety of different textured fabrics to add depth to the sample.

Three-dimensional textiles by Ruth Lee help to inspire the work with the plaited yarn and layered fabric. Using a colour palette to match the fabrics and yarns keeping to the playful theme. I decided to lace the yarn through the fabric to interlink the pieces together to make them on complete piece.

One of my favourite samples was my piece inspired by Matthew Harris and Howard Skemptons work. Creating a map of a playground in shapes and applique the fabric. Using zig-zag lines as though it were play equipment, triangles for trees etc. the fabric choice with the shapes also gave a very 90’s vibe which was not intentional but I works well in a fun, playful way.
