PART 3 RESEARCH AND PRACTICE: Part 3 Reflection

During this unit there has been a lot of areas which have required research skills. Such as the next colour for the season an area I haven’t explored before. I found it so interesting finding the different websites and gathering together all the information. Then moving on from that to creating my own colour palettes to a chosen image, using yet more new technology. Developing and adding new skills to my toolbox to use with my research. I also realise I am finding it easier to pull on my knowledge of artists to help develop my own ideas. This is due to being more confident on how to research artists and pulling on the research already done throughout my studies.

This also evident in the development of my creative skills, using apps to create mood boards, to exploring unconventional materials such as plastics, tapes and flowers within my work. I have also understood that the more creative I am the more interesting the work becomes. Even when something might not be that successful such as my coloured felt tiles, I originally wanted to make them as a tiered step display. I couldn’t get this to work so I had to rethink and develop the design, how could I get this to work?

Using the World around me and events that matter into my work has helped to inspire and develop one of my favourite selection of works. Its been a joyful experience to bring those special moments and expressing them into a physical piece of art. Not in the most obvious format but my way of expressing those memories. I have focused on darker times in previous work, so it was refreshing to explore colour, patterns and fun techniques within my work. Colour used to be an area I was frightened to explore but I have fully embraced the use of colour in my work and I’m loving it and looking forward to exploring further in my studies.

I have extensively explored different techniques that encompass my theme. Its been really interesting to begin with a theme, creating a mood board, and then developing different techniques and materials from that theme. Seeing the collection as a whole, you can really see they the come from the same theme. Yet they are all different but the way I have interpreted my theme, using the same colour palette, materials or techniques linking the samples together but keeping them unique.

I feel really positive about this unit of work I have listened to feedback and reduced the amount of writing in my blog. I have continued to explore and develop my techniques and the materials used. I have become more confident in my research skills, where to look and what to look for. I would however like to get out and look at more exhibitions again, life has been busy, and it has been hard to find time to visit London. With half term in a few weeks’ time I will ensure I get to an exhibition that week to help develop my knowledge of artists and inspiration further.

Demonstration of technical and visual skills: Materials, techniques,

observational skills, visual awareness, design and compositional skills.

Gathering together a theme, in images, colours, materials and techniques, being aware of how their composition and design fit with my intended theme.

Using my mood board as a base point to start an idea, as well as using mind maps to develop those ideas further.

Throughout this unit referring back to that initial board and using it to make design, material and technique decisions.

As well as being aware of my surroundings on days out and picking up on areas I could bring into my work and develop further.

Quality of outcome: Content, application of knowledge, presentation of work in a coherent manner, discernment, conceptualisation of thoughts and communication of ideas.

Using my knowledge I have learnt throughout my studies to produce a coherent selection of samples. With each exercise the linking to each other through colour, pattern and design. Using creative ways to express myself and the story I was trying to tell.

Using photography, my sketchbook and learning log to record my ideas and development.

Demonstration of creativity: Imagination, experimentation, invention, development of a personal voice.

Continuing to develop my creativity exploring and pushing myself out of my comfort zone. Producing experimental samples whilst expressing myself.

Context: Reflection, research and critical thinking.

I have developed a good resource of research to pull on and add onto. I feel confident on how to research an artist, materials, techniques etc. I have been able to reflect on my work and establish what went well or not so well. How I can then improve or even scrap an idea.
